A day late with this dress, sorry. This is an 1860's summer riding habit. The skirt is made of nankeen and the jacket is made of piqué and trimmed with Marseilles buttons and a silk necktie. It was inspired by the outfit second from right in THIS picture. Consuela's dresses will be available for download on her page in March.

Mel's dress: An underdress of peachskin and an overdress of organza. The shoulder portion of the dress is pleated to the seam in the center and intended to resemble the shape of a heart. When I drew it, I imagined the underdress in white and the overdress in red. Billie Jo's dress: A Civil War style evening gown, with lace on the bodice. Lace edges the overskirt and a beaded trim hangs from it. Further down, the skirt is ornamented with a zig zag trim and a ruffle. Flowers adorn the shoulder and skirt. Josie Anne's dress: A dark red, longsleeved, cashmere sweater, black corduroy skirt, black flats and a gold heart necklace. One of our favorite things about these challenges is seeing how different the outfits each of us designs is.
Happy Valentine's Day!! Mel, Billie Jo, Josie Anne The next challenge is the February Birthday Challenge. The rules are pretty much the same as the January Birthday Challenge.
Mel An 1860's evening dress of heavy corded silk. Inspired by the second dress from left on THIS plate of Godey's Lady's Book. I call it the Crenelated Evening Gown because the edge of the ruffles reminds me of a crenelated castle wall. Consuela's dresses will be available for download on her page in March.
Josie Anne Just a reminder that you have four more days until the deadline for the Valentine's Day dress challenge. The challenge rules are here: http://thepaperdollbag.weebly.com/home/valentines-dress-challenge.
We look forward to seeing your designs! Mel Consuela's first dress is a simple style of dress worn in the 1880's. In paintings and photographs that I have seen, it seems to have been worn by slaves at auction and middle to lower class women, probably as a house or everyday dress. It was most likely made of cotton, though it might have also been made of taffeta and maybe even silk for higher class women. I was inspired by THIS dress on Pinterest. Consuela's dresses will be available for download on her page in March.
Josie Anne Consuela is a Spanish American doll. She was drawn by Billie Jo and her dresses are drawn by me. Her first set of dresses is from the Civil War Era. Consuela's dresses will be posted on Mondays and Thursdays. The PDF of her dresses will be available in March. You can download the PDF of the doll on her page HERE.
Josie Anne Here are the dresses each of us drew for the January Birthday Challenge. Mel's dress: I wanted a dress that would mix carnations and garnets. I tried three different designs and am not entirely satisfied with the end result. I envision this dress to be made of red silk, with skirt ruffles and sleeves of crinkle rayon, mimicking the petals of a carnation. A beaded belt accents the waistline. The necklace and bracelet are garnets set in gold and linked with gold chains. Billie Jo's dress: Inspired by an 1800's bustle era evening dress I found on Pinterest (love that place!). It is made of silk and lace. The necklace is garnet and gold with a matching wrist bracelet worn over evening gloves. Carrie is holding a single carnation in her hand. Josie Anne's dress: This dress was inspired by the dress that Elizabeth Bennet wears to the Netherfield Ball in the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice. It is a Regency era ballgown with a small cross necklace that has a garnet in the center. Carrie is carrying a carnation flower. Since we received no other submissions this time, this concludes the challenge! You can download the PDF of these three dresses at the bottom of Carrie's page. Thanks for reading and we'd love to have you participate next time! Mel, Billie Jo, & Josie Anne We still have six days until the dresses from our January Birthday Challenge are posted, but we wanted to announce the first February challenge now, to give you all plenty of time to work on it. Also, anyone who hasn't gotten their January dresses to us yet, you still have time! We're extending the deadline to the 28th.

Also, I'd just like to reiterate that this is a challenge, not a contest. There will not be prizes. We look forward to seeing your designs! Mel |
