This is another 1930's wedding gown. It is made of satin with an a-line style skirt, a high waist, and tight fitting bodice with short ruffled sleeves. The veil is very long and flowing, held around the head with combs and hanging down to form the train. Long gloves end above the elbow. Billie Jo

This is the bridesmaids dress that I designed to coordinate with the wedding dress I posted several days ago. It is a long a-line skirt attached to the belt at the waist with a heavy flare at the bottom. Dancing in this would be amazing, it would have a wonderful swish! The bodice is fitted with a high sweetheart neckline. The sleeves are gathered to the bodice to form a puff. Billie Jo
Sometimes I like to pretend I am a wedding consultant and help a fake bride plan her wedding. It is just one of the things I do when I should be doing something else but want to have a little fun. =) My latest pretend wedding to plan has been a 1930's wedding. I found lots of of dresses but not quite what I (or my client=)) wanted so.....I went to the drawing board. Being a sewer I know that you can make whatever you want most of the time. I found a few dresses and ideas of what I wanted on Pinterest and since Emma was a 1930's doll I thought I would use her as my model and went to work. This is what I came up with. A dress of satin overlaid with Organza, pearls or rhinestones adorn the belt and sleeve and neck hems. A long train trails out from the back. The short veil is attached to the back of the head with a comb. The same pearls or rhinestones on the dress adorn the headpiece at the top to cover the comb. Long gloves come almost to the hem of the sleeves Billie Jo
"but a favorite of hers, a soft white flannel simply made."
I love the scene in The White Lady where this is taken from. It would have just been a simple dress made of white flannel so that's what I did. =) "Her one evening dress was a dark green chiffon which she herself had fashioned from an old gown of her mother’s," This is a dress Kerry wears for dinner, as you can see there was not a lot of description so I took artistic liberties. This dress is made of chiffon with a silk under dress probably, an under dress of something anyway. Lot of gathers and puckers to the bodice. Due to being sick and our hiatus, the Emma PDF will not be ready on September 15. Instead, her PDF will be available for download HERE on September 22.
Billie Jo "one a little white silk," From Kerry. This one was fun, there was not a lot in the description but that made it all the easier in some ways. I took 'white silk' and knowing the style of the day and such drew a dress. I really like how this one turned out. It is funny how sometimes you have a picture in your mind and start to draw one thing, but by the time you are done it is something completely different; well that was this dress. But I like what it was in the end better then what it started out as. Due to being sick and our hiatus, the Emma will not be ready on September 15. Billie Jo Aaaand, we're back! We will continue to post four times a week for the next two weeks until Jolene and Emma are finished. "It had a sweet round neck and a deep fall of drapery over the shoulder because Aunt Hannah did not like ordinary evening dress, did not think it modest. it had been carefully picoted at the village shop by loving hands, and cut with scrupulous pains by Aunt Jocelyn afterwards." From Silver Wings. I did a lot of searching for this one, I was not sure just what to do at first but I got an idea and came up with this. Made of chiffon the shoulder drape is a bit see through but the rest of the dress is lined with a satin. Due to being sick and our hiatus, the Emma will not be ready on September 15. Instead, her PDF will be available for download HERE on September 22.
Billie Jo "She put on a plain little cotton gown with blue flowers trailing over it and cut pockets and a belt."
This description is from Silver Wings. A great book if you ask me! Just a simple frock of flowered cotton, with a belt and pockets as well as a collar. "He ordered a hearty meal, and enjoyed it, wondering why it was the salad made him think of one night when he had taken dinner at the Wetherills'. Miss Constance had worn a gown of pale blue georgette, and looked like a beautiful goddess in a cool cloud."
This description is from The White Lady, page 164 in my copy of the book. I had a lot of fun with this one. It was a dinner or evening dress based on what it says. I made it flowing both at the sleeves and the hem. It has an under dress of silk or satin with the georgette over it, with a belt around the waist. "Well, she was glad that she had bought the little brown crepe."
From the book The Christmas Bride I don't know what page number it is in the copy I read. Though it is a very good book this is one I don't own yet, I borrowed it from a friend. Anyway I just took the color and fabric and drew a dress. In the book the girl wears it for working as a secretary in an office. |
